    Course objectives

    The student has to: a) acquire the fundamentals of neurological symptoms and signs; 2) acquire the main notion to have a correct clinical approach to a neurological patient; b) know the different diagnostic procedures and tools which can help the clinician in the differential diagnosis; c) achieve the correct clinical method

    Prerequisites

    The student has to possess an adequate knowledge of basic neuroanatomy and neurophysiology

    Frontal lessons and clinical cases presentations

    Evaluation methods

    Oral examination.The oral exam will start with the presentation of a simple clinical case and then the student has to illustrate the diagnostic protocol to achieve the diagnosis.
    Moreover, the student must have a deep knowledge of the most common neurological diseases- being able to connect neurological symptoms and signs with diseases. The final grade is expressed in 30/30 were 18 represents the minimum and 30 the maximum and it is established during the oral exam .

    Course Syllabus

    a) NEUROLOGY
    Cerebrovascular Disease: ischemic stroke, transient ischemic attack, cerebral hemorrhage, subarachnoid hemorrhage,
    Neurodegenerative disorders: Dementia (Alzheimer’s disease, frontotemporal lobar degeneration, Lewy body dementia, vascular dementia); motoneuron disorders (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, spinal muscular atrophy,) Parkinsonisms and other movement disorders (Parkinson’s disease, atypical Parkinsonisms , essential tremor, dystonia, tics and Tourette syndrome, Huntington disease, Spinal cerebellar ataxias)
    Demyelinating disease (central and peripheral): multiple sclerosis, neuromyelitis optica, Guillain Barre’syndrome, leukodystrophies.
    Paroxymal disorders: migraine and other headaches; trigeminal neuralgia; epilepsy; sleep disorders;
    Spinal cord diseases: hereditary and acquired spastic paraplegia, syringomyelia
    Disorders of neuromuscular junction: myasthenia gravis, Lambert-Eaton syndrome
    Myopathies and polineuropathies: progressive muscular dystrophies, dermatomyositis, polymyositis, inclusion body myositis, and related myopathies; hereditary neuropathies, acquired neuropathies.
    Neurocutaneous disorders: neurofibromatosis, tuberous sclerosis
    Tumors: of central and peripheral nervous system
    Infections of the nervous system: viral and batteria meningitis; encephalitis; neurolue, neuroHIV, prion diseases.
    Hydrocephalus
    Cranial nerves disorders: in particular Bell’s palsy, trigeminal neuralgia.
