Contents | The Biochemistry course is organized as follows. |
Textbook and course materials | T. M. Devlin BIOCHIMICA con aspetti clinici Casa Editrice EdiSES |
Course objectives | The Biochemistry course aims to provide medical students with the chemical and biological bases necessary for understanding the relationship between structure and function of the main classes of biomolecules and the regulation, at the molecular and cellular level, of the main metabolic pathways. This knowledge will serve the future doctor to understand the molecular basis of human diseases. |
Prerequisites | In order to attend proficiently the course of BIOCHEMISTRY the students will need to have acquired a well-established background in Biology and Molecular Biology, Physics, Chemistry and Propaedeutic Biochemistry, as specifically indicated by The Council of the School of Medicine and Surgery . |
Teaching methods | The course will be carried out with lectures by presenting slides in Power point or other computer equipment. Teachers will be available throughout the course to provide explanations on the topics covered during the lessons and to support students during their training. |
Evaluation methods | Oral Examination: the oral test, lasting about 30 minutes, intends to ascertain the learning of knowledge on the structure of the most important molecules in Biochemistry such as carbohydrates, amino acids and proteins, fatty acids and cholesterol both in their structural and metabolic role. The student must be able to demonstrate an adequate knowledge of biochemical pathways and to be able to connect cellular metabolism with hormonal regulation following the dynamic scheme fasting / good nutrition transition. Some mention will be requested on the molecular basis of some pathologies, such as those generated by genetic alterations. The final grade is expressed as 30/30 were 18 represents the minimum and 30 the maximum and it is established during the oral exam. |
